A federal judge in Mobile issued a preliminary injunction on Monday that blocks a provision of Alabama’s immigration law that would have forced illegal immigrants to leave their mobile homes.

The ruling by Judge Myron Thompson of Federal District Court replaces a temporary ruling in effect for the last two weeks. It means that people paying for their annual mobile home registration tags will not have to prove their legal residency for now.

The registrations are needed to reside in a mobile home. Attorney General Luther Strange, who is defending the law, declined to comment
